To: info-hams@ucsd.edu IMHO, I believe this would not be permissible. There are no provisions in Part 97 for routine cross-band communications between the amateur service and the citizens radio service. I am surprised the repeater owner condoned this. How to Improve my CW Speed? To: info-hams@ucsd.edu Yuzu--just a tad more, if I may. Using a tape, put the pencil down. Deliberately force yourself to start to learn to copy in your head. It is simply a new approach to an old, familiar theme. You will start hearing words [or parts of words] and not letters. There are a variety of methods to copying CW. You've learned one to about its end, i.e., letter-by-letter. Try deliberately this new approach. You'll fall back [speed-wise] but that will be only temporarily; you will recover and pass your old maximum speed in time. In-the-head copying will never be 100% "solid" at first [perhaps later] but it will soon get you over your plateau and you will start to feel much more comfortable at 30+ wpm. Later, the "solid" copy will be there at 30 wpm while the fractionated, in-the-head copy is up at 35-40 wpm. You need to learn a new method of copying in order to bring along your old letter-by-letter method of 100% "solid" copying. 73, mike, k7rls ------------------------------ Date: 8 Aug 1994 18:11:09 GMT From: meaddata!mds@uunet.uu.net Subject: Help! High speed CW is a skill that not many hams have aquired. I am like you, I copy by letter and can not copy behind. I am interested in any tips you get on this subject. I know a few CW DX'ers that can copy CW above 35 WPM. They all can copy in their head. Hearing words and not letters is the only way you can copy high speed CW. I don't know how they got this ability, but I know most of them have had many years of practice. Good luck. Mike Suhar WB8GXB Mead Data Central mds@meaddata.com PO Box 933 Dayton, OH 45401 (513) 865-7672 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Aug 1994 18:25:21 GMT From: cadre!usenet@uunet.uu.net Subject: Help! How to improve my CW speed? To: info-hams@ucsd.edu This is a very good question. I have found that going 30-35+ wpm does require some new techniques. Below is a list of things that have worked for me... 1. Practice on the air with stations that are sending at or slightly over your ability to copy. This sets up a challenge. 2. Put your pencil down and try to recognize whole words as units, rather than mechanically copying characters down on paper. Only use the pen to jot down notes. You will naturally recognize commonly used words like QTH, the, is, rig, name, etc immediately. You will be suprized at how may words you already know. For all the other words that you don't know: 3. Form the word mentally in your mind, rather than using a pen. Visualize the characters of the "current" word in your mind. Its almost like drawing the word in your head and erasing it as the "next" word arrives. It helps sometimes to close your eyes while doing this. (Rememeber your mind can draw characters faster than your hands - so your not limited to how fast you can write/type, which is usually what causes the platue to begin with). 4. As the"current" word is completely formed, your mind will take some finite time to recognize it. If you take too long, you may miss the next word... My advise is to simply let the current word go and focus on bagging the next one. This is the key. If you don't let it go, you will probably miss the next word and the next, losing the whole context of the phrase. This is the hardest part of copying in the head. Give up one, to get the rest... 5. As you get better at this, your mind will develop the ability to "copy behind". That is, your mind has the ability to both work on recognizing the "last" word and at the same time visualize the formation of the next word. This takes alot of practice. 6. Relax. Don't get too nervous about missing a word. Always look ahead! The key is too minimize the number of missed words, not bag every last word. 7. As you copy words, think about the context of the sentance or phase being sent. Many times you can "anticapate" the next word(s). You probably already do this when copying code on paper. 8. Enter into a real conversation, not just QTH is, RIG is, etc... but a conversation that you may have in person. 9. Practice. Copying in your head really allows you to use CW as a second language. It is not as difficult as it sounds, but it does require some work. But once you learn how to do it consistently, it is extremely enjoyable. And you will meet some very interesting people young and old. Enjoy... I suspect he may also be having RFI problems with other devices in his house. I run up to a KW on 40 through 10 and have not had a problem with RF triggering the X-10s. Touch lamps are another story. Those darn things tolerate very little RF. I have had some success in keeping RF out of the lamps by wrapping the power cord in a toroid core (Radio Shack #273-104).
